Where dreams are crushed...
I love movies so much! After all, they are the great art form of the 20th Century (discuss). My enthusiasm meant scripting even the most mundane Industrial Video productions as if my life depended on it. In response to the accepted wisdom that so many modern movies are badly written, I started writing a script. To my surprise, I finished it. Perhaps I should introduce my screenplay before going on. Both the theme and my motivation were inspired by several elements.
I LOVE films! I'm old enough to have seen Star Wars in the cinema, first time out. For months afterwards I would stare at the night sky, wondering if such things were happening right now, in a galaxy far, far away. Or even a long time ago. That line in the opening crawl stayed with me. The origins of my obsession with film may have something to do with the best fishing movie ever, Jaws. My very first trip to the cinema was to see Jaws. Yes I know, curious parenting skills there.
I've never forgotten the absolute thrill of being terrified. I knew it wasn't real, that I was on dry land, in a dry seat, chomping sweets, safe with some adult. Probably my Dad, but all I remember is the screen. It felt so real, like I was on that boat, watching, waiting for my turn. It’s my clearest childhood memory, bouncing out of the cinema, exhilarated, and wanting to go straight back in. I grew up in a golden age of sci-fi. The Star Wars trilogy, Superman 1 & 2, E.T. (I didn't cry). With a lack of any home-cinema technology, the cinema was the best thing about my childhood.
So, I HATE it when movies fail to suspend my disbelief! When they are written carelessly, when a character's sudden unlikely behaviour is to service a clumsy plot twist, when illogical or impossible events happen for no apparent reason or even contradict earlier events in the story. I could go on. But I won't. For now. So, I wanted to, at least, not do that. Not the highest of aspirations I grant you.
